Get A Home Warranty And Two Other Ways To Protect Your House

As humans, we like to protect things that are valuable and important to us. That's why we stress buckling up when we're riding in the car or wearing helmets when we're doing some potentially dangerous activity. We lock up our jewelry, put our kids in car seats until they're at least 3, and even make sure our phones have locks and scratch proof film on them, just in case. So what about one of our most expensive and invaluable assets ... our homes? Purchasing a home costs a lot of money, and obviously you'll want to protect it. Unfortunately, we don't know of any house-sized helmets, but here at Landmark Home Warranty, we do know a bit about protecting your home. So here are three ways you can protect your home:

INSURE YOUR HOME

The first protection plan you can purchase for your home, is insurance.  Many people know that if you want to drive a car, you have to have insurance. If you don't have insurance and you get pulled over , you can face some hefty fines. Home insurance doesn't work like that. You're not required to purchase it, unless you have a mortgage. Even if you don't have a mortgage,  home insurance is an excellent thing to have to protect your home.

Generally, getting insurance on something protects you from having to pay large sums of money you don't have when an accident occurs. For example, if you accidentally total someone's Porsche while driving, you generally don't have a million dollars in your bank account to cut the guy a check and then leave, which is why you're still driving your 1993 Ford Festiva around, right?

"Riiiiiight."

Home insurance works kind of the same way. If a natural disaster occurs, or your home floods, you don't have to pay for those accidental damages (unless of course, you flooded your home for fun. Don't do that.) A  12 inches of water damage can cost more than $50,000, which most likely isn't something you have just lying around, waiting for a flood to happen. Your home insurance will pay the price of fixing your home when it comes to natural disasters or even burglary. And speaking of burglaries ...

PURCHASE AN ALARM SYSTEM

Setting up an alarm system in your home can be beneficial in protecting you and your valuables. As nice as it is to have home insurance that will cover a break in, it's even nicer to not have to worry about a break in in the first place. There are many different types of alarm systems, including those that you can purchase that you install yourself, or from companies that come to your home and install them for you.

An alarm system works quite simply. Each alarm system has a control panel. When you leave, you set your control panel to armed, and it connects with the motion sensors around your home, whether they be on your doors, windows, or around your home. If there is a break in that is detected, the alarm system will go off, alerting police and you.

"Ah. I do believe I've forgotten my invisibility cloak again."

An alarm system can be a helpful way for you to protect your home. Sometimes even the idea of a protected home can lure burglars away from your residence, so displaying a "protected by" home sticker or sign can be helpful in preventing break ins.

GET THE BEST HOME WARRANTY

Finally, purchasing home warranty can truly protect you and your home from unexpected appliance and system repairs and replacements. You might be wondering, what is a home warranty? A home warranty works a lot like home insurance, except it covers your appliances and home systems. So, it covers the repairs and replacements on your dishwasher, plumbing system, furnace or air conditioner when they fail from normal wear and tear. A home warranty works something like this: First, you'll call the best home warranty company and purchase a home warranty plan. You can decide what kind of coverage you need, but plans can range from anywhere between $400 and $600. Then, when an appliance or home system starts having issues, you call the home warranty company. They will send out a professional contractor to take care of the problem, and all you have to pay is a small service call fee.

"What's the catch, eh?"

Honestly, a home warranty is an excellent way to save money and  protect your home. Your appliances and home systems need to be properly maintained and they have to fail from normal wear and tear (which means you can't drive over your furnace with a backhoe and expect it to be covered with a home warranty.). However, it does protect your home. With a home warranty, the value of a home goes up dramatically, and if you purchase one before moving, there's a good chance your home will sell faster and for more money.
